Construction Materials Laboratory (CML) was founded in 1943 in Knoxville, Tennessee, and is the oldest established construction materials testing laboratory in the East Tennessee Area, having served surrounding cities in Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia. The corporate headquarters are located in Knoxville, Tennessee. Jack F Llewellyn, Jr is the president and general manager of the corporation. Johnny R. Quillen is the laboratory manager of the Knoxville office.
A full service branch laboratory was opened in Johnson City, Tennessee in 1973. The Johnson City office has served the East Tennessee area, Virginia, West Virginia, and North and South Carolina Areas for approximately forty (40) years. G. Allen Browning, M.S., P.E. manages the Johnson City office.
During these 70 years, we have maintained a continuous membership in the American Society for Testing and Materials, ASTM, and a long-standing membership in the American Concrete Institute, ACI. Construction Materials Laboratory has demonstrated proficiency for the testing of construction materials and has met the requirements of AASHTO R18 set forth by the AASHTO Highway Subcommittee on Materials. We maintain a Certificate of Accreditation from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials ASSHTO Accreditation Program.
Projects range in size from small to large single/multi story residential, commercial structures, parking and driving areas, strip shopping centers, airports, city streets, 6-lane highways, multi-story buildings with parking garages, bridges, earth dams, retaining wall, landfills and truck terminals, tanks, water and waste water plants, warehouses, industrial parks, load testing of existing structures, landslides and sinkholes. During the past 70 years, we have worked on almost all imaginal projects, from very large to very small. Our clients include Owners, Contractors, Engineers, Architects, Developers, Realtors, Surveyors, Utility Districts, Federal, State, County, and City Governments.
